Dean Anderson ’86

Dean Anderson

Dean graduated from Chapman University in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry. He began his professional career at Nichols Institute (aka Quest Diagnostics), performing a variety of esoteric diagnostic assays in a high-volume laboratory before moving to Beckman Coulter (an Operating Company of Danaher Corporation) in 1989. Dean has had a highly impressive and successful career with Beckman Coulter, spanning 33 years.  He joined as a production chemist and then moved into roles with progressively more responsibility and geographical reach. Dean has served in a variety of leadership roles within Life Science and Diagnostics with responsibilities for Global Operations, including sites in the U.S., Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. His responsibilities included providing strategic leadership and new product development support for Chemistry, Immunoassay, Hematology and Microbiology Business Unit Operations, managing over 700 associates and being responsible for over $2 billion in revenue. Dean has dedicated most of his career working across Beckman Coulter and Danaher to develop disciplined and innovative business processes throughout the value chain to achieve operational excellence. Dean also actively contributed to the growth of Danaher as the Operations workstream lead for several major acquisitions, including Cytiva for over $21 billion in 2020.

Dean’s passion for meeting the challenges of the global healthcare network was most recently demonstrated when he successfully led his team to keep hospitals and laboratories around the world operational by providing desperately needed medical tests during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, he traveled extensively throughout the U.S. during the pandemic leading Operations to help develop and transfer urgently needed COVID tests in record time. He considers this to be one of the most inspiring points in his career and emphasizes the importance of serving others before ourselves.

Dean recently retired from Beckman Coulter in July 2022 and has already begun shifting his focus and resources to helping others in a variety of voluntary capacities. Dean considers the education he received and the life lessons he learned at Chapman University as part of the foundation of his personal development and professional career. Dean lives in the San Diego area with his wife, Lynne, and they have one daughter, Lauren, who graduated in May 2022 with honors from Chapman University with a Bachelor of Science in health sciences.
