2021 – Sam Buenrostro Ed.D. ’90


Dr. Sam Buenrostro is currently superintendent for the Corona-Norco Unified School District (CNUSD). He has served in numerous roles over the past 22 years in CNUSD, including deputy superintendent in human resources and instructional support. Dr. Buenrostro has been a resident of Corona for over 30 years.

Sam obtained his bachelor’s degree from Chapman University, his master’s degree from Cal State San Bernardino and his doctorate in organizational leadership at the University of La Verne. While attending Chapman, Sam was captain of the men’s soccer team. Sam is married to Sandra, a Corona High graduate and personal counselor. They have three children: Eric, Luis and Samantha.

Sam taught Spanish as well as English as a second language and was the head soccer coach at Santa Ana High, Riverside Poly and John W. North. In 1991, Sam led Santa Ana High School to a CIF championship and national recognition. Sam served as assistant principal and principal of Centennial High School for 12 years. During Sam’s tenure, Centennial High School received numerous accolades, including several CIF Championships, Riverside County Model of Excellence awards, National PLC School distinction and a California Golden Bell. Dr. Buenrostro was named the 2009 CNUSD and Riverside County Principal of the Year.

Sam places high importance on community service and healthy living. Over the years, he has provided service as a member of Corona Chamber of Commerce, Corona History Association, Circle City Kiwanis, Rotary International, Lions Club International, Boy Scouts of America and vice president of the University of La Verne Alumni Association–Doctoral Program. Sam is passionate about living life with a purpose, the power of people and inspiring others to make a difference.
