Cutting-Edge Robotics, Lasers and Design Elevate Chapman’s New Engineering Hall
The Swenson Family Hall of Engineering, the new state-of-the-art wing in the Keck Center for Science and Engineering, opened this fall as the new home of the Fowler School of Engineering. Equipped with high-tech tools, the building features an immersive layout designed to inspire collaboration and innovation.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity,” says Dean Andrew Lyon. “From the student perspective, we’re offering an amazing opportunity to get involved in research and immersive learning as early in their experience as possible,” he adds. “So we want to give students a space where they can produce physical objects that speak to realizing this potential.”

Honoring a Legacy of Pioneering Advances in Science and Technology
Jim Swenson (1937–2018) was a visionary engineer whose pioneering efforts brought high-tech circuit boards out of the research lab and into our everyday lives. By the time he passed away in 2018, Jim had left an indelible mark on nearly everyone he encountered — as an extraordinary engineer and inventor, an exceptional entrepreneur, a beloved family man, a dear friend and role model to many, a generous philanthropist and now, as an inspiration to the many engineers who will start their careers in this facility, a facility that carries his family name.
